Background

NIC was set up in 1976 to provide information technology to central and state government departments. Its NICNET network used satellite (VSAT) links to connect district offices across the country to government data centres.

Significance

An early example of a developing country building its own government-wide computer network. NIC's systems became the base on which later e-governance services were built.

Path to modern innovation

NIC runs government networks, data centres, email and cloud services, and the .gov.in domain.

Global impact

  • Brought computerised records to district administration across India.
